Zambian midfielder Clifford Mulenga sent home from Nations Cup
Jan 31, 2012, 22:09 GMT
Libreville, Gabon - The Zambian football association (FAZ) confirmed Tuesday that midfielder Clifford Mulenga has been sent home from the Africa Cup of Nations for breaking the team curfew.
Zambia topped group A at the tournament and will face surprise team Sudan in Saturday's quarter-final.
Mulenga played only once as a substitute in Zambia's three group games.
A FAZ spokesman said that Mulenga and three team-mates had celebrated after the team beat co-hosts Equatorial Guinea in their final group game.
They had arrived back in the hotel past curfew, but unlike the three other players involved, Mulenga had refused to apologize.
FAZ said in a statement that they stood behind coach Herve Renard's decision to send Mulenga home.
'The decision was taken in the interests of the team,' the statement said.
