Ivory Coast advance to quarter-finals
Jan 26, 2012, 21:14 GMT
Libreville, Gabon - Ivory Coast become the second team to advance to the quarter-finals at the Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday with a 2-0 victory against Burkina Faso.
A disappointingly small crowd in the Equatorial Guinean capital of Malabo saw Chelsea striker Salomon Kalou open the score from close range in the 16th minute, before Bakary Kone scored an own goal with eight minutes to go.
Although they still have a game to play in group B, the Elephants can no longer finish worse than second in the group. They currently top the group with six points, from Angola, who earlier in the day drew 2-2 with Sudan to move to four.
Sudan, on one point, still have a slight chance of advancing, while Burkina Faso who lost both their opening matches, have been knocked out.
On Wednesday, Equatorial Guinea, who are co-hosting the January 21 - February 12 tournament with Gabon, became the first team through to the next round after stunning Senegal 2-1.
