Vidic out for season
Dec 9, 2011, 10:05 GMT
London - Manchester United's hopes of winning the Premier League suffered a major blow on Friday as it was confirmed that Nemanja Vidic will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
The Serbian centre-back suffered the injury during United's 2-1 defeat to FC Basel on Wednesday, a result that eliminated them from the Champions League, his knee hyper-extending and damaging ligaments as an opponent fell on him.
'It's not unexpected but still bad news,' said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. 'We thought it was a bad one and unfortunately he's out for the season.'
Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling can all step in for Vidic, but with Jones regularly filling in in midfield, where United are missing Anderson and Tom Cleverley through injury, he may move for an experienced centre-back in January.
