Newcastle's Taylor out for season
Dec 4, 2011, 14:45 GMT
London - Newcastle United's hopes of maintaining their top-four challenge suffered a major blow on Sunday as it was confirmed defender Steven Taylor will be out for the season.
The centre-back will require surgery on an Achilles tendon injury sustained in Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Chelsea.
'Steven sustained an Achilles injury yesterday at the end of our game with Chelsea,' said a club spokesman.
'After medical assessment, he will be having surgery tomorrow and it is likely he will be out for the rest of the season.'
Newcastle had been able to field the same goalkeeper and back four in all 14 Premier League games so far, but their other centre-back Fabricio Coloccini suffered a thigh injury.
