Baku - Azerbaijan will renew the contract of national team coach Berti Vogts until 2014, the football federation AFFA of the former Soviet republic said on Wednesday.
Vogts, 64, is to guide Azerbaijan through qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil after the decision made by the AFFA executive committee.
Vogts won the World Cup as a player in 1974 and coached his native Germany to the Euro 1996 title. He was also in charge of Kuwait, Scotland and Nigeria before taking the Azerbaijan job in 2008.
Azerbaijan failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 and Vogts suggested in recent weeks that he may not stay on because of because his requests towards the domestic league were not likely to find entry into a new contract.
Vogts was also attacked by three men during a news-conference after a defeat against Germany in Euro qualifying this year.
