Reports: Chelsea consider relocating to Battersea Power Station
Nov 24, 2011, 16:12 GMT
London - Chelsea are reportedly to investigate the feasibility of building a new 55,000 to 60,000 seater stadium at the disused Battersea Power Station.
Any move would require the London club buying back the freehold on their Stamford Bridge ground, which holds 42,550 and then selling up.
But with a number of potential buyers circling around the iconic Battersea site, Chelsea have appointed a London developer and architecture firm to draw up plans for the relocation.
'In the past, we've talked to various people with interests in Battersea Power Station but we haven't had any substantive discussions with anyone regarding that site for several months,' a number of British newspapers on Thursday quoted a Chelsea spokesman as saying.
'However, in light of current developments, we now think it prudent to look again at the feasibility and potential for the BPS site to be developed for a football stadium.
'We have made no decision to leave Stamford Bridge and we continue to discuss with the local council any economically viable options to expand the Bridge, but we will continue to investigate various options close to Stamford Bridge.'
Battersea Power Station has not generated electricity since 2003 but was the venue last Thursday for the pre-tournament party of the ATP World Tour Final, hosting the world's top tennis players.
