Newcastle win race for Marveaux
Jun 18, 2011, 9:14 GMT
London - Newcastle United confirmed on Saturday that they will sign midfielder Sylvain Marveaux from French club Rennes when his contract expires on July 1.
Marveaux, 25, has agreed a five-year deal and is the third player to join the Premier League club Newcastle this summer.
Marveaux, a left-sided midfielder, had been strongly linked with Liverpool, only for that move to fall down. Reports on Friday suggested it was because of a failed medical, but Marveaux insisted it was over personal terms.
He hasn't played since November because of a groin injury.
'It's a great coup to have signed Sylvain, who has received interest from a number of other clubs,' said Newcastle manager Alan Pardew.
'He may not be well known to many of our fans, but he is a real talent and a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time.
'It's been a good couple of days for us on the transfer front.'
Marveuax follows French midfielder Yohan Cabaye and Senegal striker Demba Ba as the club's summer signings.
