Gattuso faces sanctions after UEFA open disciplinaryproceedings (Roundup)
Feb 16, 2011, 12:59 GMT
Milan - AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso faces a sanction over an incident at the end of his club's 1-0 Champions League defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.
Gattuso, who will miss the round of 16 return leg on March 9 in London after receiving his third booking of the competition in Tuesday's match, faces further punishment after Europe's governing body UEFA on Wednesday said they had opened disciplinary proceedings.
Gattuso was involved in an altercation with Tottenham's assistant coach Joe Jordan during the match and head-butted the former AC Milan striker after the match and had to be restrained by team-mates.
The Italian international said afterwards that he accepted responsibility for his actions. 'He provoked me during the match, but it was unacceptable to act in such a fashion towards somebody who is older than I am. I will now have to see what happens.'
UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body will look into the incidents during and after the match on February 21, the organisation said.
British newspapers were scathing in their attacks on AC Milan on Wednesday, with the Times headlining: 'Milan's shame; Tottenham's night of glory overshadowed by Gattuso violence', while the Sun said: 'Nutters 0 Heroes 1; Late Crouch winner stuns Milanimals'.
