Report: Lothar Matthaeus to coach Cameroon
Jul 1, 2010, 9:19 GMT
Hamburg - German ex-footballer Lothar Matthaeus is to succeed Paul Le Guen as Cameroon national team coach, the German sports magazine Kicker reported Thursday.
Citing unidentified sources, Kicker said Matthaeus had reached agreement in principle with Cameroon football supremo Mohammed Iya and that only his signature was missing.
Kicker said Matthaeus did not want to comment on the matter.
Matthaeus, 49, is Germany's record-capped player with 150 matches and captained them to the 1990 World Cup title. He has coached the Hungarian national team in the past and his last appointment, at Israel club Maccabi Netanja, ended a year ago.
The Frenchman Le Guen did not renew his contract after Cameroon crashed out of the World Cup last week by finishing last in Group E with defeats against the Netherlands, Denmark and Japan.
Cameroon's next task is qualifying for the 2012 African Cup of Nations, which takes place in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The Indomitable Lions are in group E along with Senegal, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mauritius in the campaign due to start later this year.
