Atmosphere turns sour in Cameroon
Jun 25, 2010, 10:05 GMT
Yaounde - It is just as well that Cameroon coach Paul Le Guen, who presided over three defeats and an early exit from the World Cup, is not likely to return to the West African nation.
Following Thursday night's 2-1 loss to the Netherlands, which rubbed salt into the wounds of a 1-0 loss to Japan and a 2-1 loss to Denmark, the Frenchman announced he would not be extending his contract, due to expire at the end of the tournament.
Back in the Cameroon capital Yaounde, the atmosphere turned sour and much hostility was on display against the hapless boss.
Fans showed little enthusiasm prior to the game - a taxi driver was even booed for flying the Cameroon flag from his vehicle.
'If that man (Le Guen) does not please us today, we will attack him when he come to Yaounde,' one fan yelled.
The police got in on the act, arresting one vuvuzela-blowing fan for disturbing the peace.
After the game, fans continued to shout anti-Le Guen slogans, blaming him for Cameroon's disappointing performances.
