No surprises in Uruguay squad ahead of World Cup
May 11, 2010, 16:36 GMT
Montevideo - Twenty-six players led by striker Diego Forlan were named in Uruguay's provisional World Cup squad.
The list was made public late Monday, and it may allow for some controversy because it includes three players - Mauricio Victorino and Alvaro Fernandez as well as Forlan - who are set to play key matches with their clubs beyond the FIFA deadline for national duty, on May 17.
Porto midfielder Cristian Rodriguez, who took part in the full qualifying process with Uruguay, was left out of the World Cup squad. He was sent off in the last match of the qualifiers, against Argentina, and he has been banned for two international games.
Coach Oscar Tabarez will have to reduce the squad to the mandatory 23 men by June 1.
Forlan's team, Atletico Madrid, is set to play the King's Cup final against Sevilla on May 19, and they have said they want to field their star.
Defender Victorino and midfielder Alvaro Fernandez have Copa Libertadores quarterfinals matches with Universidad de Chile after May 17.
The Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) stressed in its statement that all players have to be available for national team duty on May 17.
