Dick Advocaat resigns as Belgium coach
Apr 15, 2010, 15:22 GMT
Brussels - Dutchman Dick Advocaat resigned on Thursday as coach of the Belgian national football team after just six months in the job, the Belgian football association, KBVB, announced.
Advocaat has been widely linked with a move to coach the Russian national team in recent days. He coached Russian side Zenit St Petersburg to victory in the 2008 UEFA Cup.
'Dick Advocaat is no longer our coach ... The management of the KBVB, which is surprised by this decision, will refrain from commenting until it has taken all elements into account,' the royal body said in a statement.
Advocaat informed KBVB chief Francois De Keersmaecker at 2.15 pm local time (1215 GMT) 'that he is breaking his contract with the KBVB with immediate effect,' the statement said.
Advocaat started training Belgium's Red Devils in October after the caretaker, Franky Vercauteren, stepped down.
