FIFA: No free World Cup tickets, preparations running well

Sun City, South Africa - With just over 100 days to go until the 2010 World Cup in South Africa kicks off on June 11 in Johannesburg, organizing committee head Danny Jordaan said Tuesday that everything was on schedule to be completed on time. 'We are well on schedule, the preparations for a successful 2010 World Cup are running well,' Jordaan said at a World Cup workshop in Sun City. Meanwhile, FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke said he believes the remaining 700,000 available tickets out of an initial total of 3 million will be sold. Valcke said he had 'no doubts' the tickets would sell and reiterated FIFA's position that there will be no free tickets on offer for the tournament, which runs June 11 to July 11. FIFA has arranged that 20 per cent of tickets are sold as Category 4, which are much cheaper and only available to South African citizens. Initially, only 10 per cent of tickets were earmarked for this category. 'We want that South Africans come to the stadiums,' said Valcke. Category 4 tickets cost from 17 dollars for a group match and 100 dollars for a ticket to the final. Valcke and Jordaan also dismissed the latest criticism from the England media over the team's headquarters in the Royal Marang Hotel at the half-built Bafokeng Sports Palace near Rustenburg. 'The hotel has been built, it is finished,' said Jordaan.
