London - Arsenal are waiting to learnt the extent of the ankle injury that their striker Robin van Persie suffered while on international duty for Holland on Saturday.
Van Persie lasted just ten minutes of Holland's friendly match with Italy because of a right ankle injury that could keep him out of action for a matter of months.
The 26-year-old was due to have a scan on the injury on Sunday but a Dutch football association official told the BBC: 'The ankle ligaments are definitely torn.
'After the match our medical staff did not mention a break in the bone but the doctors will be able to tell us for sure. It does not look too good.'
Holland coach Bert van Marwijk said the injury did look serious.
'The first diagnosis is a bad ankle injury,' he said. 'We are waiting for X-rays in hospital. It's terrible for Robin and is not good for Holland or his club.
Van Persie's Arsenal career has been beset by injury problems with spells out for a broken toe, a metatarsal injury and a knee problem in the past few seasons.
