Capello replaces injured Gerrard with Aston Villa's Young (Roundup)
By Ben James Aug 11, 2009, 17:41 GMT
London - England coach Fabio Capello has revealed that Aston Villa's Ashley Young will deputise for the injured Steven Gerrard when England take on the Netherlands in Amsterdam on Wednesday.
Gerrard went back to his club, Liverpool to nurse a groin strain, and Capello decided that Young will replace him on the left side of his midfield.
'It will be a good test for Ashley,' Capello said. 'He has only played twice for me but the last time he did very well. It will be a good test for him.'
While Young will win his sixth cap, the withdrawal of Gerrard is a set-back for Capello, who had wanted to play his strongest available starting XI.
Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard are likely to fill the two central midfield slots, with Theo Walcott and David Beckham battle for the starting berth on the right.
Gerrard's withdrawal came a day after the announcement that Ben Foster would also be pulling out of the squad.
The Manchester United goalkeeper picked up an injury during his side's FA Community Shield defeat by Chelsea on Sunday and was replaced by Manchester City's Joe Hart, who is on loan to Birmingham City.
