Former national coach Eriksson makes surprise return to English game

London - Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson made a surprise return to English football on Wednesday when he was named as the director of football at League Two club Notts County. The 61-year-old Swede will be joined by Tord Grip, his long-serving assistant, who will become general adviser, while Eriksson will also be a shareholder. Eriksson's arrival comes a week after Notts County were taken over by a Middle-Eastern consortium. 'I am particularly attracted to this role and the unique opportunity to help build a club over the longer term,' the Swede said. Eriksson likened the role to his first job in football when he managed Degerfors in Sweden, lifting them to promotion in his first season. 'I can think of no better challenge than to attempt to do that again but this time with the world's oldest football club, where we can add to a proud tradition and hopefully bring some richly deserved success,' he said. Eriksson spent five years as England manager, taking them to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2002 and 2006, and also had successful spells in Italy, as well as a short time in charge of Manchester City.
