Wigan confirm Martinez as new manager

London - Wigan Athletic confirmed on Tuesday that Roberto Martinez will be appointed as the club's new manager. An official announcement is not expected until Wednesday, but chairman Dave Whelan told Sky Sports news that the deal is done. 'I'm very excited about securing the services of Roberto Martinez,' Whelan said. 'I hold him in the highest regard. '(On Wednesday) we will meet to discuss, amongst other things, finding transfer funds for new players.' Martinez, who spent six years at Wigan as a player, has earned an impressive reputation in leading Swansea City from League One into the Championship. The 35 year old has agreed to a three-year deal, with Wigan paying Swansea around two million pounds (3.3 million dollars) in compensation.
