Chelsea's Drobga apologises as Chelsea await sanctions

London - Chelsea striker Didier Drogba apologised on Thursday for his angry reaction towards referee Tom Henning Ovrebo at the end of the Champions League game semi-final with Barcelona on Tuesday night.

An incensed Drogba, who had previously been substituted, came onto the pitch and verbally abused the Norwegian at the end of the 1-1 draw that saw the Spanish team through to the final on away goals,

Drogba was angry at a number of penalty appeals that were rejected by Ovrebo, and swore into a television camera, in addition to pointing wildly at the referee.

In a statement through the Chelsea website, Drogba said. 'I was very upset at what happened during the game, but having seen the pictures on TV I accept that I over-reacted.

'I also fully accept that the language I used did not set a good example for those watching at home, especially children. I regret that in the heat of the moment I let out my incredible frustration and disappointment in this way, and for that I apologise.'

Chelsea also released a statement of their own, saying: 'Chelsea welcomes Didier's statement today which was made honestly and after reflection.

'We are all acutely aware of the responsibilities that lie with both the club and its players towards setting a good example as role models.

'While it is clear that some of the events last night were regrettable, they occurred only because of the high emotions and frustrations which arose from the disappointment of a controversial defeat in such an important game.

'We made representations to UEFA immediately after the game and we await their comments following a review of the match officials' report.'

Chelsea are likely to learn on Friday if they are to be sanctioned for the behaviour of their players, while Drogba and Michael Ballack - who chased the referee after a penalty appeal was turned down - could be sanctioned individually.
