Rooney to miss start of season
Aug 5, 2008, 19:15 GMT
London - Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is likely to miss the start of the season after picking up a virus on United's recent trip to Nigeria, the club said Tuesday.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said it was unlikely Rooney would recover for United's first Premier League game against Newcastle on Sunday August 17.
Rooney did not play in the friendly with Portsmouth in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, and he has missed United's two pre-season matches against Espanyol and Peterborough since returning from the summer trip to Africa.
Rooney, 22, also saw the start to last season disrupted by injury when he suffered a broken metatarsal against Reading on the opening day of the 2007/08 campaign.
Rooney's illness could also force him to miss England's friendly against the Czech Republic on August 20 at Wembley.
United were already without Cristiano Ronaldo for the first two months of the season following ankle surgery.
Ronaldo, who is under contract at Old Trafford until 2012, is still being linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.
