London - Manchester United have lodged an official complaint with football's governing body FIFA over Real Madrid's efforts to sign their forward Cristiano Ronaldo, it was announced on Monday.

The Spanish champions have made public their interest in signing the Portugal forward, but United have constantly said he is not for sale.

And though Ronaldo himself has hinted that he may want to leave the club, the English champions made their protest official by contacting FIFA.

'I can confirm that we have received an official request from Manchester United to look into the matter,' a FIFA spokesman said.

'We have only just received the documents so we need some time to analyse them before we can make any decision.'

United released a statement on the matter, saying: 'On 27 May, United made clear its intention to report Real Madrid if it continued to involve itself in the future of Ronaldo.

'Unfortunately, Real Madrid has not kept its own counsel. The club feels it has no alternative but to make a formal complaint to the world governing body, which it has done today.'
