Wayne Rooney urged to learn his national anthem
Mar 29, 2008, 14:17 GMT
London - Wayne Rooney can't sing the national anthem before England matches because he doesn't know the words, The Sun daily said on Saturday.
The report said that the Royal Society of St George has complained, saying the popular 42-times capped Manchester United striker should be a better role model and learn the words of God Save The Queen by St George's Day, April 23.
'He sticks out like a sore thumb and he is setting a bad example to the young people who idolise him,' the Society spokesman Bob Peedle was quoted as saying.
'I imagine Rooney has never been taught the words and does not know their significance. He should learn the anthem, not just because he represents English football but because it is the duty of every Englishman to sing the anthem.'
'I'd like to see him know the words by St George's Day, and I would be very happy to teach him.'
The Sun said that Rooney, 22, was ready to take up the offer, quoting the spokesman for him as saying: 'If the Royal Society of St George give us a call we may sort something out.'
The Football Association said it was up to each player whether he sings the anthem or not. The FA also said through a spokesman: 'We know that every player certainly does care passionately and has enormous pride playing for England.'
