South Africa will be ready for the World Cup: government

Johannesburg - New stadia being built to host the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa will be ready by FIFA's 2009 deadline and the issue of soccer hooligans is already being tackled, deputy finance minister Jabu Moleketi said Tuesday. Moleketi told reporters the building of five new stadia, which was delayed earlier this year by wrangling over cost overruns, would be finished by October 2009, 8 months ahead of kick-off in June 2010 There had been fears that the new 68,000-seater Green Point stadium in Cape Town, one of two venues for the semi-finals along with Durban, might not be ready within the FIFA-given deadline of October 2009. Moleketi also said that South African police were working with Interpol in a bid to clamp down on soccer hooligans planning to travel to the tournament. However, the security issues surrounding the World Cup are generally thought to stem from criminals operating within the country, which has some of the highest crime figures in the world.
