May 11, 2007, 11:07 GMT
Tottenham, England - Jermain Defoe scored in the 67th minute as Tottenham tied Blackburn, 1-1, on Thursday to inch closer to securing a berth in the UEFA Cup.
Tottenham needs a draw on Sunday against Manchester City to secure a spot in the tournament. Blackburn's chances of finishing in the top seven in the Premiership and earning an automatic berth in the UEFA Cup ended with the tie.
Blackburn took the early lead when Benedict McCarthy scored his 17th goal in the Premiership this year and 23rd overall on a header in the 32nd minute. Morten Gamst Pedersen assisted on the goal.
But Defoe ended Blackburn's hopes of climbing up the standings when he scored his 10th goal this year in the Premiership by beating American goalie Brad Friedel in the second half. Tottenham pulled into a tie for fifth place with Everton heading into the final week of the season.
Blackburn forward Jason Roberts was given a red card in the 90th minute. The ejection was for two yellow cards he received less than a minute apart.
