Van der Vaart suspended until after break
Dec 4, 2006, 21:56 GMT
Berlin, Germany - After dropping a 2-1 weekend defeat to Bochum, Hamburg began to feel the aftermath on Monday when skipper Rafael van der Vaart was issued a four-match ban for his tackle on Tommy Bechmann.
With 10 minutes left to play, the Dutch midfielder was sent off, as the ban - announced by the German Football Association (DFB) - will keep van der Vaart out for the last two league matches against Nuremberg and Aachen, along with the first two contests after winter break.
Hamburg stands second from the bottom of the Bundesliga with 11 points in 15 games, only one above last-place Mainz, which is a surprise for the German club that finished in third last season.
The captain enjoyed a previous stay at Ajax up until last year, where he gathered many accolades, including Talent of the Year (1999, 2000, 2001), Amsterdam Sportsman of the Year (2001) and Europe's Talent of the Year (2002).
