Beckham: Starting line-up place first, then contract renewal
Nov 7, 2006, 14:06 GMT
Madrid - Former England captain David Beckham is aiming to regain his place in the Real Madrid starting line-up and then extending his contract with the club, Real's sports director told a Spanish television station on Tuesday.
'He wants to stay with us, but he also wants to play,' Pedja Mijatovic told La Sexta. 'We want to extend his contract and we have already had talks. But we can, of course, not guarantee a place in the team to anybody.'
Beckham's contract expires at the end of the season and unless he reaches an agreement with Real Madrid by January other clubs could make him an offer.
He joined the former Champions League winners in 2003, but has failed to win anything with the La Liga team. His reluctance to sign a new contract has led to speculation that he is keen to leave the club and he has been linked with a possible move back to England or to the United States.
Beckham though has denied that and said he wants to stay with Real Madrid.
