Kuyt on the mark as Liverpool return to winning ways

By Jonathan Wilson Sep 20, 2006, 22:12 GMT

Liverpool - Dirk Kuyt scored his first goal for the club and Xabi Alonso scored from inside his own half as Liverpool beat Newcastle 2-0 at Anfield Wednesday.

Rafael Benitez's side had lost their previous two Premiership games but were set on their way to victory after 29 minutes when the Dutch forward, a 10-million-pound (19-million-dollar) summer signing from Feyenoord, slid in to convert Steve Finnan's cross.

Finnan had been released by a typically astute ball from Xabi Alonso, and the Spaniard capped a fine all-round display with the second goal 12 minutes from time.

Receiving the ball in the centre-circle, he spotted Steve Harper off his line and, perhaps remembering the goal he scored from a similar position in the FA Cup against Luton in January, sent a 60- yard chip arching over the keeper as he slipped on his six-yard line.

Luis Garcia also hit the post in an emphatic victory, and Newcastle's woes are likely to be worsened by an FA charge against full-back Celestine Babayaro, who appeared to deliver a sharp slap to Kuyt's face in the first half.
