Van Nistelrooy accuses Ferguson over Old Trafford exit
Sep 7, 2006, 16:26 GMT
London - Ruud van Nistelrooy has blamed manager Sir Alex Ferguson for his departure from Manchester United this summer, saying he felt it was 'like a stab in the back' when he was left out of the team for the Carling Cup final.
The Dutch forward scored 150 goals in five seasons at Old Trafford, but played a diminished role after Louis Saha was selected ahead of him as United gained their only silverware of last season with a 4-0 win over Wigan in Cardiff.
Ferguson criticised Van Nistelrooy's attitude in training, and the 30-year-old joined Real Madrid for 10.5 million pounds in the summer.
'The first three-quarters of last season went well for me but the final part is best forgotten,' Van Nistelrooy said. 'My situation with Sir Alex started to change and it became difficult for me and him to work together.
'I had previously had a marvellous relationship with him. But in February we played the Carling Cup final against Wigan and I remained on the bench for the full 90 minutes.
'To me this felt like a stab in the back.'
