Beckham denies new deal claim at Real Madrid
Aug 28, 2006, 18:02 GMT
London - Former England captain David Beckham is ready to hold talks on signing a contract extension with Real Madrid but has denied a new deal has already been signed, Britsh media reports said Monday.
A spokesman for the 31-year-old midfielder said talks on a new contract were scheduled in September.
'There is intention on both sides to tie David to an extension,' he was reported as saying.
Real president Ramon Calderon had told Spanish state television Sunday that Real had taken a 'sporting decision' to give Beckham a two-year extension to his contract until 2009.
'Marketing is also important but the most important thing is the sporting factor and the technical team gave the green light to renew Beckham's deal,' Calderon said.
Real have failed to win a major trophy in Beckham's three seasons in Spain. New England coach Steve McClaren has left the midfielder out of his first international squads after the World Cup.
Beckham was meanwhile substituted by new coach Fabio Capello during the second half of Real Madrid's goalless opening-day game against Villarreal on Sunday.
