Juve set to continue appeal before civil court

Turin, Italy - Italian football club Juventus Turin decided on Monday that they will continue their appeal against demotion into the second division over a match-fixing scheme at a civil court. Juventus said after a board meeting it was appealing over 'the unjustified gravity of the sanctions' and because the three other clubs punished in the affair got away with lighter sentences it is seeking as well. Juventus were moved from Serie A to B, stripped of the last two league titles and have 17 points deducted in the Serie B in a final football federation ruling from July 24. Lazio, Fiorentina and AC Milan were allowed to continue playing in the top flight. Juve decided on the new appeal after the Italian Olympic committee dismissed their final protest before the Italian sports authorities. The latest appeal case is not due to be heard until early September, which may further delay the start of the Serie A and B season already put back by two weeks until September 9/10 over the scandal. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
