Coach McClaren names Terry as new England captain
Aug 10, 2006, 14:30 GMT
London - John Terry has been named as the new England captain.
The Chelsea captain, 25, takes over the role from David Beckham, who stood down as skipper after this summer's World Cup finals.
Terry and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard were considered the favourites to succeed Beckham but the defender was given the nod by new England coach McClaren.
McClaren took over from Sven Goran Eriksson as England coach after the Swede resigned his role following England's quarter-final defeat by Portugal in the World Cup finals.
Terry has won 29 caps for England and will start his reign as captain in the friendly match against Greece on August 16.
