Hamburg beat Berlin in league cup opener
Jul 29, 2006, 16:02 GMT
Dusseldorf, Germany - SV Hamburg defeated Hertha Berlin 1-0 on Saturday in the opening match of the German pre-season league cup tournament, with newly-hired Vincent Kompany grabbing the winner.
The Belgium defender Kompany, 20, tapped into the empty net on the rebound of a 30-metres freekick from Rafael van der Vaart against the left post in the 52nd minute. Kompany came to Hamburg in summer from RSC Anderlecht for 8 million euros (10.1 million dollars).
Hamburg advanced into the league cup semis and are set to visit northern German rivals Werder Bremen on Tuesday.
The second quarter-final between Schalke 04 and Bayer Leverkusen was scheduled for later Saturday in Dusseldorf, with the winner moving into a Wednesday semi-final at Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
The league cup brings together the six top teams from the past Bundesliga season. Munich and Bremen had a bye into the final four due to their first and second-place finish in the 2006 Bundesliga.
The league cup final is next week Saturday in Leipzig. The new Bundesliga season starts the following weekend.
