Exactly! The Italian's main focus was on Zidane that day, no matter what, keep him in check. That's what any team would do, take the oppositions best player out, including intimidation tactics. However, the Italian player probably went too far, regardless of what his conscience is telling him. Dirty players and cheats are always able to justify the wrong things they do.
While I don't condone Mazerrati's behavior, winning the world cup is enough justification to play dirty or unsportsmanlike. In football, as long as the ref nore the side judges see it, it's legal. If you were in the same situation with the pride of your country and the greatest football achievement in the world was resting your and your 10 other teammate's shoulders, you would see the situation in a much different light.

Say all you want about Materazzi, but he's the one who scored the goal to tie the game 1-1 (after the ref gave Zidane a free kick - a GIFT). And then, Materazzi did not disappoint in the penalty kicks. This, along with his defensive play, makes him a hero in my eyes.

FIFA is a joke. The disciplinary committee has no Italian representation (what a surprise!). Only French, German, Swiss, Arab. Materazzi did not cheat, he did not have a plan to provoke Zidane and have him evicted in the final 10 mins of play. Zidane himself refutes all these lies when he said that there were no problems between himself and any italian players before the incident. People need watch that game again as in the moment its easy to be won over by your passions. What precluded the incident is there for every one to see. some facts....Zidane places a beautiful header just under the crossbar that would see France win the game, but is denied by an amazing save of Buffons., Zidane in frustration lets out a howl. Couple of minutes later France are pressing again, Materazzi is in a defensive position behind Zidane and grabs his jersey, the french attack is broken up and Zidane and Materazzi begin to walk up feild...they exchange words and Zidane heads him in the chest. We cannot be 100% certain of what was said, but by comparing their testimony we can get a pretty accurate picture. Zidane went on French television to state his case saying Materazzi abused his mother and sister. Materazzi says yes he insulted him but not his mother, religion, race or politics...he left out his sister. Zidane confirms the insult was personal and was not racist and did not include the word terrorist. Both Zidane and materazzi agree what was said earlier;that is zidane told him 'if you really want my shirt at least wait untill after the game'. So basically Mats pulled his shirt, Zizou tells him to stop and wait for the game to end then he would gladly give him his shirt, Mats doesnt appreciate this arrogant jesture and tells him to 'save it for his sister' the 'putana' and to 'go fuck himself' for goodmeasure, zizou blows a fuse and floors him with his head. Now if this incident involved any one else but ZIzou this wouldnt be an issue at all. Its been blown way out of proportion and it is really disgusting. Football players are not gradeschool teachers, there rough, tough and vulgur guys including Zizou. LIke I said if zizou was joe blow, he would have recieved a stiff fine and at least a 4,5 game suspension....but hes not hes Zizou, so we forgive him, and also if Matz was anybody else maybe he gets nothing for his trouble but a sore chest, but he is who he is aswell and gets 2 day susp. with fine. So everybody spare me the bullshit....
one more thing that really irks me is all the misinformation, lies and out right slander of Materazzi's character. all manner of things have been insinuated about what he said and then taken for facts...he called him a son of terrorist whore...he wished death on him and his family..he called him a nigger....he wished his coach died a horrible death...and my favourite...he called him a 'Harkis'?? (yeah ok). and the list goes on and on. Its one thing for any idiot with access to the internet to use these false rumours as a basis for argument...but quite another when irresponsible elements of the worlds press use these baseless arguments....and their was a lot of that going around...I wonder if these same journalists after the facts came out have had the balls to appologize. I doubt it...I feel sorry for Materazzi having his reputation being drag through the mud and been labeled a racist...He should really consider bring lawsuits against some of these Papers, thats the only way for him to regain his whats left of his Good name.

I think Zidane was absolutely correct in his response! No one should have to tolerate any kind of verbal abuse. It doesn't matter what the result is, the fact is that Zidane is a giant in the world of soccer and he will be remembered as one of the best ever to play the game. He has provided fans all over the world with many great memories throughout his career. Italy did win the world cup but they are not world champion like Brazil. Winning a world cup and being a world champion is a different thing. Today everybody called Brazil a world champion because they always win by playing football. I don't think so that Italy won by playing football. They gave football a bad name. By giving decision in zidane’s favor FIFA may be feeling bad for what happened with him in his last match and they can do nothing to stop provocation on field. I feel at least they initiated the steps to stop provocation but its upto lot of players like Materazzi to learn the lesson or keep going on with their normal football language.
Ther is also another way to solve this issue and make sure that this things will not happen in future. Coach should train players by insulting them from their young age so they can practice bearing insult of their Family or culture.

The Italians were some of the biggest divers of the tournament and played the most boring game. It's no accident that the two 'no decisions' in World Cup finals have both involved Italy and its boring game. Italy plays for ties and did just that against Brazil...they also tied France. There is no victory. It is a co-championship with France (as it was with Brazil). Penalty kick shootouts have nothing to do with soccer. Fifa will one day catch up to its fans, get rid of penalty shoot outs, and revise their historical records to show that Italy shared the championship with Brazil in 94 and France and Italy are co-champions of 2006. End of story.

And in answer to your question, the Italian team won because they played dirty. If they hadn't, they never would have beaten the Socceroos! I reiterate, the team sucks. There were better teams there who didn't dive and act and cheat who should have won.

Australia just discovered the game, so have a little humility, learn the game and after about a decade or so of Australia losing to Italy then maybe you can go and join the frenchies, Brazilians, central-southamericans, germans and English and start bashing Italy. Who is talking about Italy here? I'm talking about the Italian soccer team, not Italy. But I did watch that match and if the Socceroos suck why did the Italian team have to take a dive to win the match? I'm American btw, not Australian. And I've lived in Rome and like Italians. Just not impressed with your football team that's all.
I'd love to know what that magic stuff was in the water bottles that they were squirting on the ankles/other supposedly greviously injured body parts of the Italian team players, which could make a person who was screaming and writhing in agony (more than I did when giving birth without drugs! - lol) get up two seconds later and back on the field? The Italian team won on talent alright - a talent for diving, acting and cheating.

first off let me just say, I never said you were Australian, I said you were 'another angry socceroo fan' which you are. But as for your argument about Grosso taking a dive to win, since you say you watched the game let me remind you of a couple of things. First Italy was given a controversial straight red on Marco MAterazzi for a 'foul on his own teammate' ok. WHen it was an 11-11 game Italy easily dominated. When it was 11-10 in favour of Australia, Australia pressed but couldnt break Italy's(the national team;sorry dont mean to confuse you)defence. Now as to the foul that awarded italy a penalty kick and the winning goal. If you remember, Grosso (remember tha name)came up the left and beat one defender (he was fouled there as well but the ref allowed the advantage because he still had the ball and was so close to goal)when he made it into the box the Australian defender goes down, Grosso attempts to go around and the Aussie raises his arm impeding him. That is what is known as a foul. Penalty awarded. You can watch it again and again on youtube. Do yourself a favour and tune out the biased English Announcer. Now lets say imagine the ref doesnt award the penalty. does that mean australia wins. HELL NO. ITaly Beat Germany, A team a thousand times better than Australia(the team again)in a game that went 2 hours. so dont even doubt it. Your not Impressed with Italy, thats fine, who geeeves...I and 100 million other Italian supporters are, so quit trying to rain on our Sunnyday. You say Italy (the Team) dived, acted and cheated their way to victory. humm, yeah ok! ITaly scored 12 goals and conceded none to win that championship. Those 12 goals were scored by 11 different players. Thats championship caliber! You are so offended by cheating, you should direct your hatemail to a team like France's. Henry drew three impressive (fake fouls) all which helped them get to the final...Malouda took a huge dive for the Zidane penalty...So think about that. P.s. there is nothing magical about that spray, it is just a chemical which numbs the afflicted area. Thanks for coming out.
