Madrid - On Friday afternoon Spain manager Luis Aragones announced a pre-selection list of 27 players for the World Cup.
This list has provoked controversy due to the absence of Getate left-back Mariano Pernia, who was expected to make the cut after acquiring Spanish nationality two weeks ago.
'I really can't believe that Pernia has been left out,' said Getafe coach Bernd Schuster on Friday evening, 'especially given Spain's lack of a good left-back.'
The other notable absentees are Valencia winger Vicente Rodriguez, who claims he is on the way back from ankle injury, Espanyol playmaker Ivan de la Pena and Real Madrid midfielder Guti Hernandez.
There are two uncapped players in the squad: Villarreal right-back Javi Venta and Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta.
The full list is as follows: Antonio López, Fernando Torres and Pablo Ibáñez (Atlético Madrid); Cesc Fabregas and Jose Antonio Reyes (Arsenal), Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol and Xavi Hernandez(Barcelona); Joaquín Sanchez and Juanito Gutierrez (Betis); Asier del Horno (Chelsea); Joan Capdevila (Deportivo); Luis García, Fernando Morientes, Pepe Reina and Xabi Alonso (Liverpool); Iker Casillas, Michel Salgado, Raúl Gonzalez and Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid); David Albelda, Ruben Baraja, Santiago Cañizares, Carlos Marchena and David Villa (Valencia); Javi Venta and Marcos Senna (Villarreal).
This is Luis' penultimate list before the announcement of the definitive squad of 23 of 15 May.
