Sydney - Wallabies winger Wendell Sailor had his Australian Rugby Union (ARU) contract rescinded Friday over a cocaine habit.
Sailor, 32, who played for Australia 37 times, tested positive for cocaine in April, and tearing up his contract means the rugby star will no longer be able to play for his home country.
'Wendell Sailor's behaviour has been extremely disappointing, and we have no hesitation in terminating his contract,' ARU chief executive Gary Flowers said. 'The use of any illegal drug is contrary to the ethical concepts of sportsmanship, fair play, good medical practice and is potentially harmful to the health of the individual.'
Sailor was also banned from playing for two years, which prevents him from playing professional in Australia or in any other country.
Flowers dismissed the argument that the ARU shouldn't be testing for so-called recreational drugs. 'There is no such thing as recreational drugs,' Flowers said. 'These drugs are illegal, they are harmful to the people using them and they are not acceptable for use by our sportsmen and -women.'
Earlier this year, Sailor was sent home from South Africa after a drunken brawl outside a nightclub.
'His actions have been nothing short of irresponsible,' Flowers said. 'He already had a track record for poor behaviour which had seen him called in front of ARU and Wallaby team disciplinary committees on several previous occasions.'
