Moscow - Justyna Kowalczyk of Poland denied the hosting Russians on Thursday when she claimed her third straight cross-country skiing victory and took the World Cup lead.
Kowalcyzk won a freestyle sprint at Moscow's Luzhniki Park in 3 minutes 39.9 seconds from Russians Natalia Korosteleva and Anastasia Dotsenko.
It was the third win in a row, fifth of the season and 20th overall for Kowalczyk, who leapfrogged Marit Bjoergen atop the World Cup table with 1,524 points to the Norwegian's 1,486.
Bjoergen was not competing in Moscow and neither were leaders Dario Cologna of Switzerland (1,474) and Petter Northug of Norway (1,181) on the men's side.
Teodor Peterson of Sweden got his first World Cup in their absence in 3:08.4 minutes ahead of Norway's Anders Gloersen and Devon Kershaw of Canada.
The cross-country World Cup continues on the weekend with races in Rybinsk, Russia.
