Hirscher extends overall World Cup lead with giant slalom win

Adelboden, Switzerland - Austrian Marcel Hirscher extended his lead at the top of the overall World Cup standings with a victory in a giant slalom race on Saturday.
The 22-year-old won in a combined time of two minutes 42.50 seconds, beating compatriot Benjamin Raich by 0.08 seconds. Italian Massimiliano Blardone took third place, while American world champion Ted Ligety was fourth.
Hirscher, who secured his fourth win of the season, leads the World Cup standings with 625 points from Aksel Lund Svindal, who has 456.
Ligety is third - just three points behind the Norwegian.
Hirscher's win sees him close the gap in the discipline standings on Ligety to just 15 points. The Austrian has 365, while Ligety stands on 380.
A men's slalom will be raced on the same slope on Sunday.
