Jul 20, 2011, 11:16 GMT
Gap, France - Russian Alexandr Kolobnev's B sample has also tested positive for a banned diuretic, his Katusha team said Wednesday.
Kolobnev became the first rider to fail a dope test at this year's Tour de France when the International Cycling Union (UCI) revealed that a urine sample given by the 30-year-old on July 6 had tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide.
A statement by the Russian team said the B sample confirmed the positive test and the rider remained suspended. A final decision on his future will be made after a ruling by the Russian Cycling Federation, it said.
Following the initial positive test, Kolobnev decided to suspend himself according to UCI rules.
He could face a two-year ban and a significant fine. Under Katusha's rules, any member of the team who fails a dope test is liable to a fine of up to five times their annual salary.
