Kolobnev suspended by Katusha ahead of B-sample
Jul 12, 2011, 9:03 GMT
Aurillac, France - Russian cyclist Alexandr Kolobnev has been suspended by his Katusha team after testing positive for a banned substance, team spokesperson Andrea Agostini confirmed Tuesday in Vezac.
Kolobnev became the first rider to fail a dope test at this year's Tour de France when the International Cycling Union (UCI) revealed Monday that a urine sample given by the 30-year-old on July 6 had tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide, a banned diuretic.
A positive B-sample would result in the Russian not only being sacked by his team but also facing a two-year ban and a significant fine. Under Katusha's rules, any member of the team who fails a dope test is liable to a fine of up to five times their annual salary.
Katusha also confirmed that Kolobnev, who was lying 69th in the overall standings, has withdrawn from the Tour, deciding to suspend himself according to UCI rules.
