Reports: Contador confirms Tour start
Jun 11, 2011, 15:54 GMT
Madrid - Alberto Contador confirmed that he will aim to defend his Tour de France title next month, Spanish news reports said on Saturday.
'I will go to the Tour de France ... The Tour is the biggest race and the best riders are in it. That gives me extra motivation,' the Saxo Bank team leader Contador was quoted as saying after a race in his home town of Pinto.
Contador won the Giro d'Italia last month and will aim to become the first man since Marco Pantani in 1998 to get a Giro and Tour double at the famous French race set for July 2-24.
Contador, 29, has won the Tour three times but faces a hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport over a positive doping test for clenbuterol at the 2010 Tour.
The rider was cleared by the Spanish federation as Contador argued he took in the substance through contaminated beef. However, the ruling cycling body UCI and the World Anti-Doping Agency are challenging the Spanish verdict before CAS.
If the CAS finds Contador guilty and bans him, he would be stripped of the 2010 Tour title and all results since a provisional suspension was lifted in February.
