Route for 2008 Tour de France announced

Paris - The 2008 Tour de France will for the first time in 40 years begin without a prologue, race organizers confirmed Thursday at the announcement of the race route in Paris. The first stage of cycling's most famous race will be from Brest to Plumelec on July 5 and ends on July 27 in Paris after travelling through the Pyrenees and the Alps. The 95th Tour will be made up of 21 stages and cover a total distance of 3,500 kilometres. It will have 10 flat stages, five mountain stages, four medium mountain stages and two individual time-trials. Race organizer Patrice Clerc announced that cyclists will need to present a biological passport as an 'ethical requirement' before being given the all-clear to start. The introduction of a biological passport for cyclists was agreed at a two-day anti-doping conference held earlier this week in Paris. Under the system, blood and urine samples collected from all riders in 2008 will be used to create a medical profile that would then be compared to the data registered in doping tests. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
