Doha, Qatar - News briefs on Monday at the December 1 - December 15 Asian Games being held in the Qatar capital Doha.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL - The only female referee at the beach volleyball competition, Mariko Satomi, had the honour of refereeing the bronze medal match between China and Thailand. The Japanese, who has officiated at more than 90 international matches, was a candidate for the final, but as Japan will be playing in that match she was ruled out.
She is one of 19 females officiating on the international circuit and is a former player herself.
BOWLING - With one exception, each of the 13 Asian Games women's records were broken during the competition in Doha. Malaysia enjoyed their best Asian Games ever, winning three gold and three silver medals. They were second to South Korea though, that won four gold medals, four silver medals and three bronze for a total of 11 medals.
BOXING - There was a huge upset in the bantam weight 54kg division when Philippines' Joan Tiphon beat the 2004 Athens silver medallist Worapoj Petchkoom from Thailand in the semi-finals. Petchkoom won a bronze medal, while Tiphon will take on South Korean Han Soon Chul for the gold.
FOOTBALL - A change of venue announced by the organizers has seen the men's semi-final match between Iraq and South Korea moved to the Al-Gharrafa Stadium, where it will be played on Tuesday December 12 at 1600 local time.
SAILING - Thailand's Arun Homraruen, who won a bronze medal in the men's light mistral class has become one of just four sailors to win medals at four consecutive Asian Games. One of them, Pakistan's Munir Sadiq, even won medals in at five Games.
SEPAKTAKRAW - Tournament favourites Thailand, who were expected to add to their previous gold medal in the fringe sport, were stunned by China in the women's doubles competition. Japan and Myanmar have already secured their places in the semi-finals of the event.
SOFTBALL - Rain again caused a delay in a competition as the softball start had to be delayed by an hour. Once the competition got underway for the day though, there were no further interruptions and all the matches could be played.
