Doha, Qatar - Newsbriefs on Sunday at the December 1 - December 15 Asian Games being held in the Qatar capital Doha.
ATHLETICS - In the decathlon event the favourite and defending champion Qi Haifeng had to withdraw after picking up an injury during the warm-up to the first event.
CANOE-KAYAK - The canoe-kayak afternoon session had to be delayed by half an hour to repair one of the lane cables. Officials managed to do so without problems and the competition could then start.
DOPING - Uzbekistan weightlifters Elmira Ramileva and Alexander Urinov were disqualified from the Games after testing positive for the anabolic steroid Stanazonol and cannabis respectively. Ramileva had finished fifth in the women's 69kg division, while Urinov was seventh in the men's 105kg class.
Their expulsions came a day after Myanmar weightlifter Than Kyi Kyi had tested positive for the banned diuretic furosemide and been disqualified.
FENCING - Iranian Mojtaba Abedini Shormasti first lost his temper and then the match in the quarter-finals of the men's individual sabre fencing event.
In his match against Wiradech Kothny from Thailand, the Iranian, who stunned South Korean fourth seed Oh Seung Hwan in the previous round, objected to a refereeing decision and then threw his helmet on the floor before kicking it away. He was warned, received a yellow card, but persisted. He then received a red card, but still persisted and was then shown a black card, which means he loses the fight. He has also been disqualified from the men's team event.
FOOTBALL - China, who went into the women's football tournament without ever having lost a game at the Asian Games, will have to make do with the bronze medal - at best - after losing their semi- final clash against North Korea 3-1 after extra-time. The North Koreans will face Japan in the final after the Japanese stunned South Korea 1-0 in the other semi-final.
HOCKEY I - India's downward-spiralling hockey fortunes plunged to new depths as they were knocked out of the hockey competition after they were held to a 1-1 draw by South Korea in their pool A game.
They had earlier lost 3-2 to China and will now - for the first time since the introduction of hockey at the 1958 Games - remain without a medal.
HOCKEY II - Security guards at a pool B match between Bangladesh and Oman had to rush onto the field to separate players after the final whistle. Bangladesh scored twice in the final minutes to win 5-3, but were then attacked by Omani players. One of the Bangladeshi players had to be stretchered off the field.
