Aspen, Colorado - Austria's Kathrin Zettel claimed a first World Cup win of her career by racing to victory in the opening women's giant slalom of the alpine skiing season Saturday.
Zettel clocked a combined time of 2 minutes 16.10 seconds in Aspen, Colorado to edge out Finland's Tanja Poutiainen (2:16.38) and Austrian Michaela Kirchgasser (2:16.68).
The win put Zettel ahead overall on 160 points after two races after she had finished third in this month's opening slalom.
Sweden's Anja Paerson, who won the World Cup giant slalom title last season, crashed out on the first run after hitting a gate.
Austria's Marlies Schild, who won the slalom at Levi, Finland, also failed to qualify for the second run.
Schild is now third overall (100 points) behind Zettel and another Austrian, Nicole Hosp (130) who was fourth in 2:16.88.
