Lake Louise, Canada - Veteran Marco Buechel of Liechtenstein won the first men's World Cup downhill of the alpine skiing season on Saturday.
Buechel, 35, recorded an overall time of 1 minute 50.72 seconds to claim victory at Lake Louise in Canada.
Canada's Manuel Osborne-Paradis was second, 0.05 of a second behind, with Italy's Peter Fill third (1:50.86).
'I didn't expect this, this was totally out of blue,' said Buechel, whose win came two weeks after breaking his rib in a training run crash.
'Days like this keep me going, I want to experience this feeling so many times. I love this job so much.'
Austria's former world champion Hermann Maier was sixth, while American Bode Miller could only manage 28th place while Austria's Benjamin Raich was two places further behind.
Buechel joins Raich on 100 points as overall leader after two races of the World Cup season.
