Armstrong believes in Landis - difficult situation for cycling

Indianapolis - Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong believes in Floyd Landis' innocence, even though this year's Tour winner tested positive for testosterone. 'Everybody knows that cycling is going through a difficult phase at the moment. But I believe in Floyd Landis,' Armstrong said at a charity event in Indianapolis on the weekend. Armstrong, who retired from cycling a year ago, believes that Landis went to the media too soon after his positive test became known. 'I would have told him to take it slower,' Armstrong who himself was accused of doping, said. Armstrong said that different sporting codes applied different doping policies. American football, for instance, had a totally different policy than cycling. Landis, who is a former team-mate of Armstrong, has since speculated how the level of testosterone in his body, which was much too high, could be explained. He suggested that it could have been introduced into the body through medicine he was taking for a hip injury. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
