Berlin - German Interior Minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, announced Friday that he will look to tighten his country's doping laws in the wake of Tour de France winner Floyd Landis testing positive for testosterone.
The measures, the details of which have yet to be announced, will be agreed with the German justice ministry and the German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB).
'We have to do everything we can to restore and maintain the reputation of sport,' Schaeuble said in an interview to be published in Saturday's Bild Zeitung.
DOSB president Thomas Bach has already spoken out in favour of tougher anti-doping laws including compulsory labelling of banned substances, the ending of the free movement of doping products and a ban on their distribution by post.
The politicians within the German parliament, the Bundestag, are believed to be in favour of these measures.
Landis has denied that he used banned substances to win the most famous cycle race in the world.
The American failed a doping test administered after he won a gruelling July 20 mountain stage with an amazing breakaway ride.
Landis claimed that the positive drug test could have been caused by medicines taken for his hip ailment, or a thyroid gland complaint, or, like many other cyclists, he had a naturally high level of testosterone.
