May 7, 2006, 19:42 GMT
Charleroi, Belgium - Robbie McEwan of Australia was the strongest on an uphill home straight on Sunday to win a mass sprint in the second stage of the 89th Giro d'Italia cycling race.
McEwan, who rides for Davitamon Lotto, passed German Olaf Pollack on the inside to win the 197-kilometres stage from Mons to Charleroi in 4 hours 51 minutes 40 seconds.
The T-Mobile rider Pollack was second and Italian Quick Step rider Paolo Bettini third, leaving only fourth for the Italian top sprinter Alessandro Petacchi of the Milram team instead of a 20th Giro stage win.
The stage saw no change in the overall rankings, with the 2002 and 2005 champion Paolo Savoldelli from the Discovery Channel team retaining the leader's pink jersey with an 11-second lead over Bradley McGee, an Australian with the Francaise des Jeux team.
The Giro continues in Belgium on Monday with the third stage over 202km from Perwez to Namur.
