Seraing, Belgium - Defending champion Paolo Savoldelli of Italy on Saturday won the prologue of the 89th Giro d'Italia cycling race.

Savoldelli, who rides for the Discovery Channel team, clocked 7 minutes 50 seconds on the six-kilometres course with a short but steep climb in the Belgian town of Seraing to wear the pink jersey of Giro leader. Savoldelli also win the Giro in 2002.

Fancied Italian Ivan Basso trailed by 23 seconds and former German Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich, who is making only his second appearance at the Giro, missed Savoldelli's time by a massive 49 seconds.

The first stage on Sunday is over 197km from Mons from Charleroi. The Giro moves to Italy after the fourth stage and is completed after 3,526km on May 28 in Milan.
