Last stage of Tour, and of Armstrong's career, gets underway

Corbeil-Essonnes, France - The last stage of the 2005 Tour de France and of Lance Armstrong's storybook career got underway Sunday in the town of Corbeil-Essones near Paris. Unless lightning or some other disaster strikes him so that he is unable to finish the stage, the 33-year-old Armstrong will cap his career Sunday by winning his record seventh consecutive Tour de France title. He started the stage with a lead of 4 minutes 40 seconds over Italian Ivan Basso, with Jan Ullrich of Germany 6 minutes 21 seconds behind. Armstrong punctuated his domination of the Tour de France by winning Saturday's individual time trial, his first stage win of this year's Tour. "As a sportsman, I wanted to go out on top," Armstrong said after the stage. The last Tour stage is traditionally a victory parade for the winner, with the race usually ending in a mass sprint on the Champs Elysees in Paris. However, the mood will not be entirely festive, since more than 2,300 police officers and gendarmes have been deployed in the French capital as a result of the heightened state of alert in the wake of the July 7 terror attacks in London. © dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
