NHL deals clears way for 2005/2006 hockey season

Washington - A 310-day work stoppage ended Friday when the National Hockey League's (NHL) Board of Governors ratified an agreement that the league and its players had worked out. The move clears the way to a hockey season this year, after the 2004/2005 season was cancelled because of the labour dispute. Players had to accept a salary cap and pay cuts. The Board of Governors also accepted sweeping rule changes, such as doing away with ties and putting in place a shootout to decide the winner of a game. In addition, modifications were approved to the dimensions of hockey rinks and to the equipment goalies can wear. © dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
